Here’s what you need to know!
What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?
DEF is an emissions control liquid required by modern diesel engines that feature Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. DEF works alongside Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to eliminate dangerous nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines. It is important to note that DEF is never added to diesel fuel. Instead, it’s injected into the exhaust system.
DEF is made from urea comprised of nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon and oxygen, mixed into de-ionized water. When this is super-heated and combined with the SCR diesel fumes, chemical transformations occur which convert most of the emissions into harmless nitrogen -instead of harmful nitrogen oxide- along with water. It’s a simple, safe, relatively eco-friendly solution to the problem of creating non-harmful diesel engines.
The majority of truck and engine manufacturers make use of SCR technology to meet the new regulations for diesel exhaust emissions. With SCR engines, the driver must maintain adequate levels of DEF in the truck’s DEF tank at all times.
The DEF goes into a separate tank for vehicles that are made after 2011 with the latest environmental standards. Afterward, the fluid is injected into the exhaust system.
DEF consumption averages 2-3% of your diesel usage – for every 100 litres of diesel you should go through approximately 2 litres of DEF. This varies based on the vehicles operation, duty cycle, geography and load ratings.
We offer DEF in 10-liter jugs, 208 / L and 1250 / L totes for bulk delivery.
