HVAC
How old is your system?
Depending on the type of system you’re looking to upgrade, you should consider its age and how much money you risk putting into it in the future. If your furnace or air conditioner are acting up, anything in the 10 to 15 year old range is probably not going to last much longer – with or without repairs.
How much money can I save?
While shelling out for a new system might seem like the more expensive option, you should always consider the long-term costs of keeping an old air conditioner or furnace. There are a number of ways that purchasing a new unit could save you money, including:
- Ontario Power Authority Rebates
- High efficiency units that cost less to run
- A more appropriate size and capacity unit for your home’s specifications
- Saving money on repairs in the long-run

When it comes to home comfort, you have lots of options for heating your home. But some homeowners don’t consider the benefits of propane for home heating. Here’s why you should consider propane for your home.
- Propane works hard; it is an efficient and effective means for meeting your home’s energy needs.
- Propane can be used for space heating, water heating and outdoor uses.
- Because appliances that run on propane are energy efficient, they can also save you money in annual energy costs; propane is readily available and competitively priced.
- Propane is a low-carbon fuel, which means it burns cleanly and is a great option if you’re looking to lower your carbon footprint; propane also produces fewer greenhouse gases than other forms of energy.
If your furnace is whistling it can mean a few things. First, there may be gaps in your ducts. Second, your filter may be clogged, especially if the whistling sound is new. Pull out the filter to see if the whistling stops, and if it’s clogged and stopping airflow, replace it or clean it.
If your furnace is rattling, it’s generally more of an annoyance than a sign of real issues. See if any of your ducts are loose and if they are, try to secure them better. If that doesn’t work or if you believe it’s coming from the furnace’s motor, call your technician.
Have you ever heard your furnace make a loud bang when you turn it on? It could be that your ductwork is flexing when the pressure changes, or it could be a small explosion called an ignition roll out. If you’re concerned that this is the problem, call your HVAC technician immediately and turn your furnace off in the meantime.

No, price is not a factor in deciding when your deliveries are scheduled. We schedule deliveries when our computerized delivery system projects that your tank is between 1/3 and 1/2 full.
Our delivery team keeps a close watch on weather forecasts to anticipate extreme weather, especially snow and ice storms. By using our sophisticated delivery projection system, we know when you will need a delivery and make adjustments to your delivery cycle based on weather forecasts. Lubricants
- Keep lubricants properly labelled to avoid confusion
- Take extra care when labelling lubricants that are stored outdoors
- Reduce the likelihood of contamination by using different dispensing tools for each lubricant type
- Store lubricants indoors when possible
- If lubricants must be stored outside, make sure they’re sheltered from rain, snow and other elements
- Avoid storing petroleum-based lubricants in humid conditions
- Avoid outdoor storage of water-based lubricants
- Store lubricant drums on their sides to reduce the risk of seals drying out and ingestion of moisture
- Keep drums and pails capped when not in use

Propane is a hydrocarbon (C3H8) and is commonly referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, LP-gas, or LPG. Propane is produced from both natural gas processing and crude oil refining
Yes, Propane is a safe and environmentally friendly fuel that is widely used throughout the Canada in homes, on farms, on the road, and in industrial and commercial operations.
It is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless. As with natural gas, an identifying odor is added so the gas can be readily detected.
Bird Fuels offers a Propane Fixed Price Program. This allows our customers the opportunity to lock in their propane rate for the fall and winter season. Please contact us near the end of summer for our posted rates. Â Â
Propane is efficient, environmentally friends and versatile.
Propane can be used in more places in your home than any other type of fuel.
- Whole-house heating
- Back-up heat to a heat pump
- Fireplaces
- Stoves
- Fireplace Inserts
- Log Sets
- Room heaters
- Domestic hot water
- Tankless hot water
- Outdoor living
- Pool and spa heaters
- Clothes dryer

No. We can deliver propane anytime without anyone being home. The only time you need to be home is if we have to enter the house i.e. to start the heating appliance, or complete a gas check. Please remember if you have pets, please ensure their safety and the safety of our delivery personnel by properly securing all pets.
- In times of very deep snow, uncover the fill pipe. Your delivery person would also appreciate it if you clear a path to your fill pipe.
- If you have a long driveway, remember that a delivery truck is much wider than a car. When plowing your driveway, please have it plowed 11 feet wide, which will be enough for the delivery truck and place markers along the sides of your driveway.
Supply, demand, and speculation. Rapidly growing economies, like China and India are having a dramatic impact on worldwide demand for propane, while unknown winter temperatures make it hard to predict winter demand for propane. Similar worldwide and regional factors affect the supply side. Circumstances in major energy-producing regions affect global supply. In Canada, if we experience a mild winter, propane inventories (propane that is ready to be delivered for consumption) build up, and prices typically decrease. Conversely, colder-than-expected temperatures cause prices to increase as inventories decrease.
DEF
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a non-hazardous solution made up of 32.5 % urea and 67.5% deionized water.
That depends on the temperature of your storage facility. If you store DEF in a climate-controlled environment at or below 77°F (25°C), it should keep its full potency for up to two years. If exposed to sunlight, the shelf life will be reduced.
In order to meet the nitrogen oxide levels set by the EPA, most diesel engine manufacturers of both on road and off road equipment are using Selective Catalytic Reduction systems that require DEF to break down dangerous NOx emissions produced by diesel engines into nitrogen and water. Â
Bird Fuels offers DEF in 9.46L containers or 208L drums. We also offer DEF in bulk storage containers, that can be picked up at our offices in; Owen Sound, Orangeville and Collingwood. DEF can also be delivered to your home or business location, please see our Bulk Fuel Delivery services.
DEF is corrosive for some metals such as carbon steel, aluminum, copper and zinc. Therefore should be stored in containers made of other materials. If it comes in contact with skin it can cause mild irritation.
Although DEF will stain clothing it isn’t necessary to wear protective clothing. If DEF spills onto your clothing thoroughly rinse with water.
A 32.5% solution of DEF will begin to crystallize and freeze at 12 deg F (-11 deg C). At 32.5%, both the urea and water will freeze at the same rate, ensuring that as it thaws, the fluid does not become diluted, or over concentrated. The freezing and unthawing of DEF will not cause degradation of the product. DEF should not be kept at temperatures above 86°F. Â
If ingested please consult your physician immediately.
The fumes themselves are similar to the smell of cleaning products. If inhaled moved to an area of fresh air. If symptoms such as itchy throat or nose occur and persist, consult a physician. Â
No. Because the manufacturer is able to tune the engine any way it wants to, and then allow the SCR and DEF to take care of the pollutants, most manufacturers have discovered better fuel mileage (compared to other smog-reduction systems). Truckmakers claim it improves fuel mileage by as much as 5 percent.
All truckmakers incorporate some type of staged warning system (some offer actual gauges) to let the driver know exactly how close to empty the system is. Whether a vehicle goes into a "limp home" or reduced engine power or limits the number of times you can turn the engine on will depend on the specific car or truck, but at some point, it will not start. Simply put, you should treat your DEF tank the same way you treat your fuel tank; you don't want to leave yourself stranded by ignoring the warnings.
