Diesel Exhaust Fluid, otherwise referred to as DEF for short, is a particular type of emissions control liquid that is required by modern diesel engines that utilize Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. Typically, it's used to help remove harmful Nitrogen Oxide emissions from diesel engines. The fluid itself is a totally non-hazardous solution comprised of approximately 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water.
Make no mistake: DEF isn't a recommendation, but a requirement. It's necessary in order to meet the nitrogen oxide levels set by the EPA for both on and off-road equipment using Selective Catalytic Reduction. Those systems require DEF to break down the dangerous emissions produced by their engines into nitrogen and water.

Should the situation call for it, we also offer DEF in bulk storage containers. Other Important Considerations
Don't forget that DEF is corrosive for some metals (with aluminum, copper and zinc being the most prominent examples), therefore they must always be stored in specific types of containers.
For the best results, make sure you're storing your DEF in temperatures between -11° C and 30°C. DEF can degrade over time and become less effective after a year goes by (or if the temperature rises too high), so keep all of this in mind when planning your long-term storage applications. Overexposure to sunlight has also been known to significantly reduce the shelf life of DEF.
Finally, understand that DEF consumption will be approximately 2% of all diesel fuel consumed. In other words, it's consumed on a 50 to 1 ratio with diesel. Keep this in mind when placing your orders.
