Diesel Exhaust Fluid, otherwise referred to as DEF for short, is a particular type of emissions control liquid that is required by modern diesel engines that utilize Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. Typically, it's used to help remove harmful Nitrogen Oxide emissions from diesel engines. The fluid itself is a totally non-hazardous solution comprised of approximately 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water.

Make no mistake: DEF isn't a recommendation, but a requirement. It's necessary in order to meet the nitrogen oxide levels set by the EPA for both on and off-road equipment using Selective Catalytic Reduction. Those systems require DEF to break down the dangerous emissions produced by their engines into nitrogen and water.

Other Important Considerations

Proper Storage Requirements: DEF is corrosive to certain metals, including aluminum, copper, and zinc. Always store DEF in approved, compatible containers designed specifically for this purpose.

Temperature & Shelf Life: For optimal performance, DEF should be stored between –11°C and 30°C. DEF can degrade over time, especially when exposed to high temperatures. Its effectiveness may drop after one year or sooner if stored improperly. Protect DEF from direct sunlight, as UV exposure significantly reduces its shelf life.

Usage Ratio: DEF consumption averages 2% of total diesel fuel used — roughly a 50:1 ratio of diesel to DEF. Keep this in mind when planning orders and long-term supply management.
