How do furnaces work?

A furnace has four main components:

  • Burners

    These deliver and burn fuel

  • Heat exchanger

This allows heat to move into the house without allowing combustion gases to leak out

  • Blower motor

This forces the heated air through a duct system to circulate throughout the house

  • Controls

These regulate ignition, gas flow, draft strength, fan speed, and other aspects of the system

When you adjust your thermostat to a higher temperature, the furnace is turned on and starts producing heat. The heat exchanger warms up the air from the cold air return and then the blower motor forces it through the duct system and out of your supply vents. At the same time, exhaust gases are vented out through a flue pipe. A furnace can also cool your home by circulating air through an air conditioning evaporator coil.

What is AFUE

AFUE stands for annual fuel utilization efficiency. This rating tells you how well your furnace converts fuel to heat over the course of a typical year. The higher the percentage, the better. For example, an AFUE of 90 means that 90% of the fuel becomes heat for your home and the other 10% escapes through the chimney or elsewhere. Higher AFUE ratings mean better efficiency and lower energy costs.

Why buy a high efficiency

High-efficiency furnaces can save you a lot of money. Most high-efficiency furnaces are rated at 90 AFUE or above, compared to old low-efficiency models that have a 56-70 AFUE rating.

Cost Comparison Example:
An old furnace operating at 60-70 AFUE means you're losing 30-40 cents of every dollar you spend on heating fuel. Upgrading to a high-efficiency model with 90+ AFUE ensures more of your money goes toward heating your home, not escaping through the chimney.

Beyond the cost savings, high-efficiency furnaces also provide more consistent heating, quieter operation, and reduced environmental impact through lower fuel consumption.
